"Evaluation is a positive,
helping act."
The General
Evaluator leads the evaluation team (timer, grammarian, ah counter,
quizmaster, speech evaluators). The GE evaluates the formal
speaking portion of the meeting and provides constructive feedback.
Prior to the meeting:
-
Check
with Toastmaster for changes to meeting format/agenda process.
-
Contact Speech Evaluators to clarify roles and responsibilities.
-
Prepare a brief summary of General Evaluator role.
-
Check
with Toastmaster on last-minute changes.
Upon arrival at the meeting:
-
Check with your team to
ensure that they are prepared e.g. have the speech manual, know the
speech objectives, etc. Provide guidance, if needed e.g.
show timer how to use stopwatch.
- Sit near back of
room during the formal speaking portion, to better observe the
meeting.
During the meeting:
-
Introduce the
evaluation team, which normally includes the Timer, Grammarian, Ah
Counter, Quizmaster and Speech evaluators.
-
Record
observations throughout the meeting of the positive aspects and areas
requiring improvements. Some clubs use "General Evaluation of the
Meeting forms". For example: Is the Club's property
(e.g. banner, educational material) properly displayed? Were there
unnecessary distractions? Did the meeting and segments start and end
on time? Were transitions between segments done smoothly?
Was the lectern left "abandoned" at any time?
-
Conduct evaluation portion of meeting

transition between the various evaluation team segments
-

performance and recommendations for improvement.

You are not to
re-evaluate the speakers, though you may wish to add something the
evaluator may have missed. You may wish to comment on the
quality of evaluations - were they positive, upbeat, helpful?
Did they point the way to improvement?
-
Thank each evaluator
and your other team members
-
Turn control back to
the Toastmaster at the end of the GE segment.
