The speaker's goal is improve personal
communication skills by delivering a prepared speech.
Prior to the meeting:
- Choose a
speech assignment from one of the Toastmasters manuals, reflective of
your stage in the Toastmaster's program.
- Prepare a
speech according to the assignment and practice!
- Prepare
notes, in point form, if needed.
- Tell your
speech evaluator if you have any special things you want observed e.g. skills or techniques you
are working on improving.
- Ensure any
prop or equipment you plan on using are in place or functioning
properly.
- Bring your manual
- Make copies of your evaluation
form, if this is your Club's practice, for the audience to complete.
Some clubs use a generic evaluation form for the audience.
- Give the Toastmaster
your introduction and speech title
Upon arrival at the meeting:
- Communicate any special setup
needs (e.g. having the lectern moved prior to your speech) to the
Sergeant-at-Arms
- Ensure any
prop or equipment you plan on using are in place or functioning
properly.
- Give your
manual to your speech evaluator for his or her written evaluation.
During the meeting:

When introduced, smoothly leave your chair and walk
to the lectern
- Wait until the
Toastmaster sits down, before proceeding with your speech

Deliver your speech - remember to acknowledge the
Toastmaster and audience (e.g. "Mr. Toastmaster, Fellow Toastmasters
and honoured guests" )
- When finishing
your speech, never thank your audience. Simply return control of
the meeting to the Toastmaster. Wait for the Toastmaster to come to
the lectern, shake hands, then return to your chair.
- During the
evaluation, listen intently for helpful hints. Pay attention to
suggestions from other members.
After the meeting:
- Get your manual from your
evaluator.
- If uncertain about any aspect of
your evaluation, clarify this with your evaluator
- Have the VP, Education initial
your project completion record (located in the back of your manual)
